Everyday Flowers

March 5, 2018 By Amanda Kinney

Did you know? One handful of good garden soil can contain more organisms than the number of human beings who have ever lived!

Freshly harvested flowers

The local flower movement is riding quickly on the heals of the local food movement.

Here at Persephone we’re passionate about fresh flowers! We grow dozens of varieties including many herbs, bulbs, greens, ornamental grasses and old fashioned favorites like sweet peas, dahlias, daffodils and sunflowers. We arrange them for weddings, bunch them for the farmer’s market, offer them in our CSA boxes and provide them by the bucket for DIY fun! It’s exciting to see horizons expanding. Customers are asking for more than the tired predictable blooms flown in from Colombia and Ecuador, flowers whose backstory is something we’d rather not think about. The first thing we naturally want to do when we pick up a flower is to stick our nose in and take a big whiff. But sticking your nose into a scent-less, chemically processed rose which might last for a week on your table, but without much heart, can be pretty unsatisfying. You even question at the end of the week: should I add this to my compost pile?

PLEASE, DON’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT TREATING YOURSELF TO FLOWERS!

Flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. Our precious bees need all the help they can get. The fact that we don’t use chemicals on our plants make them an excellent food source for all sorts of beneficial insects we rely on to help with the checks and balances of keeping our crops pest-free.

Having lots of flowers in our fields also helps tremendously in our crop rotations. Disease cycles build up in the soil when a relatively small representation of vegetable plant families are grown season after season. Inserting the huge diversity of flower varieties into the mix has noticeably helped give our soil a break.

Intern Update: Squash, Farmers and Flowers!

July 14, 2016 By Persephone

Yellow and green summer squash
Summer squash ready for our CSA subscribers

Summer squash means it must be summer, right? We were warned about “Juneuary” but “Januly” is a whole different story. Luckily today seems to be warming back up – this sun is definitely a sight for sore eyes. This week we welcomed some new and old faces to the farm! Previous years’ interns stopped by to help out around the farm, and two new interns have been added to the mix (welcome Kris and Gracie). Be sure to say hello if you see them!

If you stopped by the Bainbridge Island Farmers market on Saturday (or saw our Facebook page), you already know we set a new Persephone Farm record of sweet pea bunches – 63! Those and all the other flowers bursting into bloom have been keeping us plenty busy, and us interns are getting to learn more about the flowers and how to harvest them. The most exciting part to me, though, is getting to use them in bouquets! Our intern bouquet making school, taught by Rebecca, is always a highlight of our Wednesdays and Fridays, and we hope you all are loving the beautiful flowers! Here are some pictures of our flowers we harvested this morning, and some of the bouquets we’ve made so far

(Persephone’s note – Brian and Brooklyn are our other awesome 2016 Interns.)

Our Wedding Flowers Featured in a New Book, Fresh from the Field

April 13, 2014 By Persephone

Fresh from the Field wedding flower bookA new book, Fresh from the Field Wedding Flowers highlights the growing local flower movement and includes dozens of photos of wedding bouquets made with seasonal, locally-grown flowers— including a beautiful wedding arbor by Persephone Farm! Written by Lynn Byczynski and Erin Benzakein, the book celebrates the beauty of seasonal and sustainable flowers. From heirloom narcissus, ranunculus and frilly French tulips in the spring to dramatic café au lait dahlias paired with berries and dark ninebark foliage in the fall, the bouquets showcase the floral bounty of each season.

Conscientious consumers are increasingly aware of where and how and where the products they buy are produced. For brides and grooms, using local flowers is a way to make their weddings distinct, different and more meaningful. Learn more about Persephone Farm’s wedding flowers. We primarily serve Kitsap County, West Sound including Bainbridge Island, Hansville, Poulsbo, Gig Harbor and more. Occasionally, for large parties, venture farther afield to the Seattle area or the Olympic Pennisula. Don’t miss our photo gallery of Persephone’s beautiful wedding flowers — bridal bouquets; reception decorations wedding arbors, and of course, boutonnieres.

More info: The book Fresh from the Field Wedding Flowers can be ordered at: www.freshfromthefieldweddings.com
Slow Flower expert, Debra Prinzing has great post and podcast about the book.
