Ode to week 4

June 27, 2019 By Persephone

[We’re sharing our email to CSA subscriber, enjoy. And it’s not to late to join our CSA.]

Cauliflower with leaves

Welcome to week 4!
Get ready for so many more!
Your bin, is full of delights
for a gorgeous din!
Cauliflower and the beginning of raspberries are highlights!
(P.S. Raspberry shares start next week!)

Here through the grey we’ve found sunshine
And have been noticing the cycle sublime.
After the first Cauliflower harvest last week
many are touched my sunlight showing a purple streak!
These Cauliflower we planted mid spring
have fruited about when we found ourselves furrowing beds
to plant out yet another secession to become king!
And so as you know one thing grows till its spread
Across the compost pile to help another move ahead!

At this point in the season,
we’re really starting to see it all come round
and are learning so many of the reasons
of how and why and when is sound
to plant, harvest and weed.
This is just a glimpse to join your feed.

Wishing you well, till next week,
Peace and peas

2019 CSA Orientation June 5

May 30, 2019 By Persephone

Our CSA orientation is June 5, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Please bring your family and join us for an evening at the Farm. See your summer vegetables growing! Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, taste a leaf of sweet fennel or sour sorrel as we stroll the fields and meet our hard-working interns. We’ll explain our pickup system and you’ll have the opportunity to signup for optional add-on shares. These will be delicious ways to support other local producers, and an opportunity to collect an even more abundant basket each week. At the end of the evening, take home your first vegetables of this season! (Subscribers should have received an email from Rebecca with additional details.)

Shares still available!

We are very excited to see this program starting for another glorious season. If you know of others who might be interested in joining us, please spread the word that shares are still available. If you refer someone who subscribes, we’ll thank you with a free box of veggies and, of course, a huge hug and many thanks.

We look forward to meeting all of our new subscribers and seeing the familiar faces of friends and neighbors. Contact Rebecca if you have questions. And be sure to follow us on Instagram @persephonefarmer!

Outstanding in the Field at Persephone Farm, July 13, 2019

March 25, 2019 By Persephone

Big News!

We are thrilled to be partnering with our longtime friend, chef Brendan McGill, to host a farm dinner with Outstanding in the Field. This is a BIG HONOR !

The event will be on July 13, 2019. (Sorry, it sold out in a snap!)

Brendan is the celebrated owner of Hitchcock, Bruciato and the soon to open Bar Hitchcock on Bainbridge Island as well as several other great restaurants in Seattle.

Since Hitchcock’s opening, Persephone and Hitchcock have grown up together. We’ve both remodeled, redecorated, surfed some food waves, created some signature dishes and have enjoyed the farm to table ride which is different every season.

We look forward to seeing this outstanding vintage red bus in Indianola.

Meet the 2019 Interns

March 10, 2019 By Persephone

Left to right: Sarah, Emily, Rebecca, Vanessa, and Emma

Please welcome our fabulous new interns!

Sarah, 26, is a librarian from MI who has been volunteering at the Lansing Food Bank Community Gardens and MSU student farm CSA for the past year.  She says that “honoring her commitments” is a core value for her.

Emily, 23,  has been managing a permaculture homestead in IN. She’s been living and working on the 75 acre property in a very solitary environment and is happy to be a part of a team at Persephone Farm.

Vanessa, 22,  is originally from upstate NY. She has 30 stamps in her passport and I interviewed her while she was in Vienna. Her pet peeve is food waste.

Emma, 23, has been an intern for the last two seasons at Hayshaker Farm in Walla Walla which is owned and operated by Chandler Briggs, a past Persephone intern from way back in 2007. How’s that for a full circle connection?

We’ve been potting up the seedlings and learning to use our beast of a rototiller to chop in the soil, building cover crops. We’re seeding broccoli, cauliflower, kale and many gorgeous new varieties of flowers. We’ve learned canning with some plum chutney I made to stay busy on a recent cold winter night. And we’re building the community which is Persephone Farm. Thank you for being a part of that community.  ~ Rebecca

Snowpocalypse

February 27, 2019 By Persephone

We survived the snowpocalypse pretty much unscathed, but boy did Rebecca spend a lot of energy scraping off the greenhouses, keeping fans and heaters blowing on exposed pipes and safeguarding the two vulnerable pump houses. Two long power outages added to the challenges.

It was beautiful; it was stressful.

Normal is nice.

Oh, it’s not too early to think about the upcoming season of bounty. You can subscribe to our CSA here.
